The Churches of Britain and Ireland
Epworth, Lincolnshire The Baptist Church is on Station Road - the congregation dating from the late 17th century (Genuki says 1673). A map of 1885 labels it as Baptist Chapel (General). The older building at the right was a Sunday School; the original chapel stood at the left end of the present church. SE 7741 0454. © David Regan (2025). Link. The former Kilham Memorial Methodist Chapel stands across the road from Wesley Memorial Methodist Church, on High Street. SE 7810 0392. Its grade II listing dates it to 1859-60, as a Methodist New Connexion Chapel, and closing in 1944. © David Regan (2025). Older maps show a Mission Room at the north end of the village at SE 7667 0516. Built between 1885 and 1907 (from maps), it had gone out of use before 1953. Whether it's the same building or its replacement on the same site is unclear, though David favours its survival. © David Regan (2025). The cemetery on Burnham Road has a Mortuary Chapel, seen by Streetview in 2023. It pre-dates a map of 1885. A date-stone for 1881 can be seen on another view (the curtains suggesting secular use), © David Regan (2025). SE 7806 0333. An otherwise unidentified Chapel is shown on older maps on Station Road at SE 7768 0425. Pre-dating a map of 1885, it was still in active use into the second half of the last century, but at some point was converted into a shop. It's identified here as Primitive Methodist, and dated to 1883. The building to its left, the former Sunday School of 1909, stands on the site of an earlier P.M. Chapel of 1821. © David Regan (2025). A plaque in the churchyard commemorates Baron William de Mowbray - Wikipedia. © David Regan (2025).Previously in the Unknown section, John Bowdler was looking for locations for this font. Rather plain, I wasn't hopeful of a solution. However, Simon Davies came through and identified it as being the font of St. Andrew. A more recent photo can be seen here, where it's apparent that a new stand has been built for it. Link. Grade I listed. The churchyard has a listed gravestone, and a chest-tomb, for which see here.
