The Churches of Britain and Ireland
Rock Ferry, Merseyside
Rock Ferry on Wikipedia. A Gospel Hall used to stand at the junction of Ebenezer Street and Bold Street, at SJ 3305 8684. Its site lies beneath the industrial buildings seen in a Streetview from 2022. Highfield U.R.C. (2015 Streetview) on Highfield Road was originally Congregational, and dated in its grade II listing to 1870-1. SJ 3295 8609. A Presbyterian Church used to stand on New Chester Road. It pre-dated a map of 1882, where it's labelled as English Presb. Chapel. It must the same Presbyterian Church on New Chester Road which Pevsner dates to 1857-8. And since he notes it, it must have been demolished post-1971, the date of my edition. The building on its site was seen by Streetview in 2024. SJ 3317 8665. Rock Ferry Baptist Church used to stand on Bedford Road at SJ 3318 8677. It seems to have been built and closed in the first half of the last century (it doesn't show on a map of 1899, and had already gone out of use by 1949). It was set well back from the road, behind the later white-painted houses to the left of the black gates, seen in a Streetview from 2025. What was perhaps its successor recently stood on New Chester Road. Rock Ferry Baptist Chapel was seen by Streetview in 2008, when still seemingly in active use, the final Streetview when derelict in 2020, and in 2025 when it had been replaced by flats. SJ 3309 8665. St. Anne (R.C.) on Highfield Road, as seen by Streetview in 2025 and in 2022. In the latter photo can be seen the base of the never-built tower, and substantial buttressing added to counter structural problems. Its grade II listing dates it to 1875-7 by Pugin. SJ 3284 8651. Link1, with numerous photos here. Link2. Wikipedia. The adjacent Bedford Court (2025 Streetview) stands on the site of St. Anne's Convent, which pre-dated the church, showing on a map surveyed no later than 1875. SJ 3283 8655. The present Holy Family Convent is also very close by, at SJ 3280 8653. 2025 Streetview. St. Barnabas used to stand on Russell Road. Its site (2025 Streetview) remains vacant. Pevsner dates it to 1903, and it must have survived until 1971 or later. However, Genuki says 1895-1978. SJ 3312 8651. St. Paul is on Old Chester Road, and was seen by Streetview in 2025. Its dated in its grade II listing to 1854-5. SJ 3254 8683. Link1. Link2.
St. Paul's Road
Mission Church (U.R.C., according to this
source), on St. Paul's Road, as seen by Streetview in 2018. It's not
labelled as a place of worship on a map of 1966. It had also earlier
been a place of worship, noticed in a directory of 1914
as Mission House of the Presbyterian
Church of England, though maps of this time also don't label it as a
place of worship. SJ 3270 8697. Salvation Army Community Church (2022 Streetview) on Old Chester Road is (or is on the site of) a former Wesleyan Methodist Chapel shown on a map of 1882. SJ 3249 8728. The site of Trinity (Wesleyan) Methodist Church on New Chester Road, as seen by Streetview in 2025. Old maps show it to have been built by 1882, ands was still in active use at least up to 1949. The National Archives reference documents for the years 1859-1964. SJ 3315 8647.
