Of Barnes Street Baptist Church, nothing survives, although what were the schoolrooms remain in use as a small garage business. It stands at the junction of Barnes Street and Lee Street. © Gerard Charmley (2017). According to this source, the church stood "by the Forts Arms public house in Chapel Street", and dates it to 1765-1905 (when it was demolished). The Forts Arms pub survives by a roundabout at the junction of Barnes Road and Rishton Road, but no available map show a chapel near it. It was succeeded by Blackburn Road Baptist Chapel, dated in the source already given (where there is a photo) to 1888, demolished in 1970. It stood at the junction of Blackburn Road and Atlas Street at SD 7492 3048. This in its turn was succeeded by the Clayton Baptist Church on Sparth Road (see below).

St. Mary (R.C., built 1958, and dedicated 1998) on Devonshire Drive. Two interior views - 1, 2. SD 749 311. All © Mike Berrell (2016).

The former Wesleyan Methodist Church on Barnes Square. Mike explains that the church proper (demolished "several decades ago") stood to the right. The congregation then met in the Sunday School (the present building, built 1854), but this too has now closed, and is up for sale. There is planning approval for the demolition of this building too. All © Mike Berrell (2014).

A probable former chapel on Sydney Street. Old maps first show this as a Methodist Mission Room, later Methodist Sunday School. Maps also show that across the street stood Mercer Methodist Church, now replaced by housing. SD 751 304. © Mike Berrell (2014).
