The Churches of Britain and Ireland

The Counties of Britain.

The counties of Britain have suffered more (and more repeated) change in the last forty years than they have in the preceding four centuries.

When I first started this website, I used a then-current road atlas (for those interested, the 1999 Concise AA Road Atlas, Britain) to determine the county a particular place was located in.

At the beginning of their index, it says "Each place name entry in this index is identified by its County, County Borough or Council Area name."

If I could turn the clock back, I would probably use the old historic counties - but we are where we are; and going back over more than 24,000 church entries is impractical, given the amount of time I have available.

The GENUKI site is recommended, not least for its concordance of the old and new counties.
